A soldier fatally shot a jaguar at an Olympic Torch ceremony in Brazil on Monday after it escaped from its handlers.
“We made a mistake in permitting the Olympic torch, a symbol of peace and unity, to be exhibited alongside a chained wild animal,” the local Olympic committee said in a statement. “We guarantee that there will be no more such incidents at Rio 2016.” Animal rights groups were outraged at the killing, questioning why a jaguar was involved in such a ceremony in the first place. Meanwhile, environmental authorities said the jaguar, otherwise known as “Juma,” should not have been used because “no request was made to authorize the participation.”
